This week on Media & Games Insight: Gabe Newell, god and savior of the #PCMasterrace, launched the worlds biggest game distribution platform, Steam, in 2003 as a way to digitally distribute Valves games such as Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike to its millions of players all around the world.
Steam maintained its number one position for game distribution easily for the next decade, but it has been finally challenged in recent years by a range of smaller companies and one behemoth company: Epic Games.
Epic Games entered the fray in late 2018 with the launch of their Epic Games Store. Like Steam, EGS also had games from a range of different publishers and developers but also began offering free games regularly, including many huge AAA titles, all paid for out of pocket by Epic. Their marketing strategy worked, and slowly EGS has been gaining on Steam as a viable games distribution platform.
Do you use Steam or EGS? What free games have you received? Let us know below!
