This week on Media & Games Insight: #Streaming and video-on-demand giants such as #Netflix, Hulu and Disney Plus are now fighting for one of the worlds most precious commodities: your attention.
In the past decade, the rise of VOD services have been rapidly catching up to traditional television services and while the gap is fairly large, theres no doubt streaming services are the future of entertainment.
Reed Hastings, creator of Netflix, created Netflix originally as a DVD rental service that was to compete with Blockbuster and provide consumers with a service that lacked the shortcomings of Blockbusters offerings. Their biggest unique selling point was their offering of rental DVDs by mail, allowing customers to wait in the comfort of their homes for their movies to arrive.
Hastings knew that the future of video was in streaming and approached Blockbuster for a partnership, but was laughed off and assured that in-person rentals were the future. Not the best decision!
Join us as we uncover the history of video streaming and the future of the war for your attention!
