This week on Media & Games Insight: From Ouya to Star Citizen, crowdfunding has given the video games industry one of the most successful (for some) methods of raising capital for the full product lifecycle.
Kickstarter, one of the most popular crowdfunding platforms, was responsible for hosting the biggest crowdfunded game to date: Star Citizen. With over $250,000,000 raised to date, the game has been coined as one of the most ambitious gaming projects ever conceived and as a result of such ambitions, it is still yet to be fully released. With an expected delivery date of 2012, Star Citizen has even gone as far as to be called a Ponzi scheme by frustrated backers.
With over 325 games crowdfunded in 2018, its clear appealing straight to the end user is a great way of raising the funds needed to cover the ever increasing costs of game development. But as we find out, it doesnt always end with the result being quite what the players wanted.
