This week on #MGInsight: #Twitter, the home of the ubiquitous little blue bird, launched in 2006 as the brainchild of co-founder Jack Dorsey, who sought to create a space to send SMS like messages between friends (fun fact: this is the origin of the original 140 character limit!). But what is the Twitter business model? Will it be able to continue on its current trajectory?
In October 2019, Twitter announced a ban on all political advertising, with Dorsey announcing that allowing users to pay to increase the reach of their political speech has consequences that todays political infrastructure is not equipped to handle.
This step from Twitter was hailed as positive move in the recognition of the influence that social media platforms have and their responsibility to both the users and the general public to prevent the propagation of fake news.
Given these developments, it seems like a blow to how Twitter earns its money. Since 2010, Twitter has operated at a loss, with 2018 being the first profitable year in the last decade, but what comes next for their attempt to increase profitability?
