During the Cuban Missile Crisis, four Soviet Foxtrot class submarines tried to run the blockade on Cuba. As the US navy hunted them, the diesel powered submarines were forced to stay submerged. In the hot waters of the Caribbean, conditions onboard soon became unbearable. Confused by heat and CO2 poisoning, the commander of submarine B-59 would almost launch a nuclear war. This is an abbreviated excerpt from the diary of one of the men aboard that submarine, Anatoly Petrovich Andreyev.
